Isfahan The finest carpets were made during the Safavid period in the 16th and 17th century. The art was destroyed during the 18th century by the Afghan invasion and was not fully revived till 1900. From this time Isfahan regained its reputation with the beautiful floral designs based on traditional patterns. The Persian knot is used, and with very high density are still made with silk pile. |
Kashan A great carpet-making centre. With a revival in the 19th century, Kashan showed little decline from the great period of the 16th and 17th centuries. Perhaps the finest carpets in recent years have come from this area, this includes silk and some large and magnificent floral carpets. They have a central medallion, red and blue are commonest colours. The Persian knot is used and the weft is sometimes silk. |
Tabriz Tabriz is an important centre for making and selling of a wide range of carpets. Antique Tabriz carpets, which are broadly similar in design to those of Kashan or Kirman, are eagerly sought. They are usually made with the Persian knot. There are excellent reproductions of old silk hunting carpets. Carpet-making developed here largely in response to export demands in the mid-19th century, and is now organised along industrial lines. Rugs of excellence are still produced from this area. |
Qum & Nain Very high quality carpets have been made in the city of Qum for perhaps the last half century. Patterns range over the whole Persian tradition, though an ivory ground for the field and a predominantly blue border are characteristic of many examples. Both the Shah Abbas pattern and boteh motif are frequently employed. Occasionally silk is introduced into the design for highly detailed parts of design. Although Qum is about 300km from Nain, their carpets are closely similar and of equally fine quality. |
